Chapter 9

Thad/ Isaac

THAD

“How are you feeling, Roger?” I asked.

“Great, the nurse just gave me some painkillers,” Roger replied, giving me a goofy smile.

I avoided a wince. A thick swatch of bandages covered Roger’s neck and I could see more of them under his hospital gown.

The human must have been in plenty of pain before the meds kicked in.

Zack and I traded concerned looks. Roger dug into the paper brown bag I handed him earlier. Roger took out the bacon cheeseburger with unconcealed glee.

Before Zack and I drove to the hospital, I asked Roger if I could get him anything.

In the end, all Roger wanted a greasy cheeseburger from the local diner. According to Roger, the hospital food was unappetizing.

“Hey, don’t look so down, boss. I’m alive, thanks to you both,” Roger said.

He finished his food in a few bites.

“I never meant for you to get hurt,” I told him.

“I know. I came out of this experience with a few scars that would impress the ladies. That’s good enough for me,” Roger said with a shrug.

Roger might seem indifferent but the attack would always stay with him for the rest of his life.

I was his employer. It was my job to ensure his safety, and I failed.

Zack came up behind me. I had taken the chair next to the hospital bed. Zack placed his hands on my shoulders and began massaging the tense muscles there.

We talked for a little more. When Roger seemed more relaxed, I brought out the big guns.

“Roger, we need to ask you an important question,” I began.

There was no use beating around the bush. Besides, the nurse might smell the burgers and fries and kick both Zack and I out of Roger’s room.

“Sure, go ahead,” Roger said.

Roger reached for the paper bag and started munching on the fries.

“Do you remember what your attacker looked like?” Zack asked.

Roger momentarily froze, and I didn’t miss the look of momentary terror and panic in his eyes.

This savage shifter had really done a number on him, and that angered me.

“Roger, you’re safe now. This monster won’t be able to hurt you again. He’ll have Zack and me to deal with,” I reassured the human.

Roger recovered and flashed me a small smile.

“Zack, I can understand but you, Thad?”

I pretended to look affronted. “Despite how I appear, I can handle one or two shifters on my own,” I said.

Roger fell silent for a few moments and I realized he was doing his best to recall the features of the shifter who left him to die in my store.

“He was big, mean looking and smelled real nasty, like he hadn’t taken a shower for a week. I can’t remember the color of his eyes or hair,” Roger admitted.

My heart fell. That wasn’t much to go on, but it was time we stopped badgering Roger and allowed him to rest.

I thought Roger was done, but he added, “He had an ugly tribal tattoo on the left side of his face.”

“Thank you, Roger. You were very helpful,” I said.
